A square nut is a type of fastener with four sides and a square cross-section, ideal for use with bolts and screws that have matching square heads. They come in many different sizes and materials including steel and stainless steel and can withstand high levels of tension without detachment or twisting. They are often employed in heavy-duty applications.
Square nuts provide more contact surface area between themselves and the part they're fastening than conventional six-sided hex nuts, helping to prevent loosening more easily while also being less likely to round-off after repeated loosening/tightening cycles. Furthermore, they can often be tightened/loosened by hand (provided a sturdy grip can be obtained on two opposing sides) making them suitable for blind locations where reaching it with wrench is impossible.
Installing fasteners requires measuring square nuts accurately; to do this effectively, lay it flat on a tabletop and use a tape measure to take measurements from all four sides - counting how many lines appear will give an approximate millimetre measurement for it.
A square nut can be used to securely fasten different materials, including machinery units, foundations, furniture equipment and more. You can purchase square nuts in various sizes made of brass or steel alloys; others may even come plated for corrosion resistance and in some instances feature one side chamfered off to close off bolt ends and prevent foreign matter contamination of threads.
